The Friary in Clonmel to reopen once a week for Mass and prayer

The Friary in Clonmel will be known as the Abbey House of Prayer when it reopens

The Friary in Clonmel will reopen as the Abbey House of Prayer Clonmel with Mass at 10am on Tuesday June 13.

A notice to this effect was posted outside the church over the weekend.

A ceremony of the blessing of lilies will take place at the 10am Mass on June 13.

It's understood that the church, which closed in January, is to open once a week for prayer and for Mass, which will be celebrated by the priests of the area.

The people of Clonmel bade a fond farewell to the Franciscan community, who had been in the town for 753 years, when the Friary closed with a special Mass of Thanksgiving and Farewell on January 6.

Last month it was announced that a total of 55 Ukrainian refugees would be accommodated in the building.

It’s understood that they would be accommodated in the residential part of the building and not the former church.
