Tipperary's Sharlene Mawdsley may have finished out of the medals in the 400 metres A final at a meeting in Huelva, Spain on Tuesday night, but she still had the satisfaction of running a personal best for the distance.

The Newport woman clocked a time of 51.34 seconds when finishing fourth behind Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain, who won in a time of 49.78.

The Irish record is held by Rhasidat Adeleke.

24-year-old Mawdsley will be hoping to progress from this fine start to the season, as she searches for a place on the Irish team for next year's Olympic Games in Paris.
