The Tipperary junior camogie team are busy preparing for their championship opener this weekend. Manager David Sullivan has been busy preparing his charges ahead of the game: “We won the Munster championship on the 21st of May and we took a few days off then as we had been on the go since November 18,” Sullivan said.
“We put a huge emphasis on the league to ensure we stayed in division 2 and the Munster championship came soon after so we hadn’t a chance to give the girls a break. The bodies are good. A break is as good as ten training sessions to recover the hunger and that kind of stuff,” he says.
The Tipperary manager is without two key players for the championship campaign but despite the losses, the mood is good in the camp: “We are without Rachael O’Dwyer going forward as she suffered a season ending hand injury just before the Munster final against Limerick and Sarah Madden is gone travelling to America. On the other hand Amy Crosse is back now and Miriam Murphy is back in full tilt as well.
Saoirse McGrath and Ciara Brennan are in too so we have four players we didn’t have in our Munster campaign so we are really looking forward to the All-Ireland series.”
Like with all team sports, there are areas to improve upon and David feels that performances are constantly improving: “We had to hurl really well everyday in the league because when you are playing Intermediate sides and if you are anyway off at all you just get beaten and that is the way it is.
“We took it for granted we would continue with that form but we made hard work of the games in Munster. We have learned a lot from it. If you are anyway off in this campaign teams will put it up to you,” the Tipperary manager says.
This Saturday Wicklow make the trek to Tipperary for the championship opener. The Leinster side were defeated by Cavan in their last game and need to win at The Ragg this Saturday to stay in contention. David Sullivan knows they will provide a formidable challenge: “We travelled to watch their game last Saturday evening. Cavan ran out convincing winners but there was nothing in it in the first half until a couple of Cavan goals just before half time.
“For us a win against Wicklow would mean we are in an All-Ireland quarter final on July 7. When we started last November that date was in our minds. We are hoping to get over the line,” he finished.
