Arravale Rovers Ladies Football Club representatives with the Cathaoirleach and Cllr Annemarie Ryan Shiner
On Friday May 26, the Cathaoirleach Councillor Micheál Anglim and the elected members of the Tipperary - Cahir - Cashel Municipal District accorded a civic reception to the Ladies Football clubs in their district areas in the Council Chamber of the Civic Offices at Rosanna Road, Tipperary Town.
Speaking at the reception, Cllr Anglim said that a civic reception was the highest honour that they could bestow on an individual or group.
“It is in recognition of what you have done for ladies football and for the success that you and your clubs have brought to our district. The dedication all the volunteers in your clubs give to be able to help girls as young as six years old to start out on the road to learn the skills of ladies football, has got to be admired and applauded.
“I know only too well what you do for your club and your parish and I see it in my own home village of Ardfinnan where people like Peggy Kennedy and Barbara Moran and Orla O’Neill as chairperson, have literally given their lives to the club.
NOT ALL ABOUT FOOTBALL
“I mention these three ladies as each of your clubs have people equal to them in their work for ladies football. It's not all about football, as the six year old girls turn up with their parents for training and both the girls and their parents can and often do make friendships at those training sessions that last a lifetime.
“The skill levels to which ladies football has now reached is visible at all games. Aisling Moloney, Orla O’Dwyer, Samantha Lambert and Laura Dillon, through your work at club level have become role models for the young six year old starting out.
“TG4 has brought ladies football at county level to a much wider audience and this is only right and proper for the game.
“My reasons for giving this reception was simple, to give the 13 ladies football clubs of this district the respect and thanks which you richly deserve but sometimes unfortunately do not receive,” said Cllr. Anglim.
The motion to accord the civic reception was proposed by the Cathaoirleach and seconded by the Leas Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Michael Fitzgerald.
Others to address the meeting were Cllr. Roger Kennedy, County Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Declan Burgess, Cllr. Marie Murphy, Cllr. Andy Moloney, Cllr. John Crosse, Cllr. Mairín McGrath, Cllr. Annemarie Ryan (Shiner), Deputy Martin Browne and Deputy Mattie McGrath.
