SSE Renewables, the leading developer and operator of renewable energy in Ireland, has awarded more than €19,000 in funding to community groups near its Knockastanna Wind Farm on the Limerick and Tipperary border.

A total of nine local groups benefitted including schools, sports clubs and community organisations.

SSE Renewables has paid over €200,000 in funding to community projects in the area since 2010 through its Community Fund programme.

The response in recent years from community groups near the wind farm has been significant and demonstrates the depth of community-driven initiatives. As a result, the decision was taken to award two years funding and run the Knockastanna Wind Farm community fund bi-annually.

This year’s combined two-year contribution brings the company’s overall contribution in the region to €206,142.

Sean Treacy's GAA Club will put its funding towards installing security lighting and resurfacing the club’s car park.

Oliver Carr, Club Development Officer, Sean Treacy GAA Club said: “SSE Renewables funding will enable us to install security lighting and resurface the club car park, which is used extensively by the public from 7am to 10.30pm.

"This funding for the lighting and resurfacing of the car park will make the area safe for both young and older members of the community”.

The funding, which was presented at Cullen Lattin AFC in Tipperary this week has been awarded to nine community projects in the Limerick and Tipperary border area.

These include Bilboa National School, a contribution towards the astra project for the school;

Cappawhite National School, a contribution towards safety yard mats for the school;

Cullen Lattin AFC, funding to purchase a fertilising machine for the club;

Cullen Lattin Tidy Towns, funding for hanging baskets and a bench in the public area of Cullen Lattin;

Curreeny Community Hall, funding towards resurfacing the hall car park;

Knockbrittas Foilmahonmore Residents Association, a contribution towards hedge cutting in the area;

Doon GAA Club, a contribution towards installing disabled car spaces for easy access to the walking track and toilet/changing room facilities;

and Rearcross National School, a contribution towards replacing the fencing around the school’s tennis court.
