Tipperary hurling legend John Leahy and friends are set to take on a sporting challenge to support the Dillon Quirke Foundation.
They will participate in a Trilogy Triathlon event for the Dillon Quirke Foundation on September 2.
The foundation was set up by Dillon’s parents Dan and Hazel and his family in honour of their beloved son, who sadly died due to SADS August last year in Semple Stadium playing for his club Clonoulty Rossmore.
“I have been friends of the Quirke family for years and lined out with Dan and Dillon’s uncle in law Declan Ryan for Tipperary, winning an All-Ireland U21 hurling final back in 1989.
Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) takes one hundred young lives in Ireland every year. The foundation's aim is to raise awareness and save lives by screening every GAA player both male and female from the age of twelve upwards,” said John Leahy.
This fundraising event entails ten individuals/teams completing a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle, and 10km run, three times during the day from the Hotel Minella Leisure Centre Clonmel.
The participants are John Leahy, Noel Ryan, Audrey Smyth, Paul Higgins, James Maher, Ciara Gaynor-Cairns, Ann Marie Doran, Keith Robinson, Michael Ryan, and a team from both Clonmel Tri Club and Elevate Fitness & Performance who have varied levels of experience in triathlon, swimming, and running, and have kindly agreed to dedicate their efforts to raising funds and completing this event for the Dillon Quirke Foundation.
The first Triathlon will start at 8.30am with the swim, followed by cycle at 9.15am and run at 11.00am.
The second Triathlon will start at 12.30pm with the swim, followed by cycle at 1.15pm and run at 3.00pm.
The third Triathlon will start at 4.30pm with the swim, followed by cycle at 5.15pm and run at 7.00pm with an estimated finish time of 8.00pm.
“We would encourage people to join us for any of the cycle (40km) or run legs (10km), or both throughout the course of the day and donate to this very worthy cause.
Also, simply just pop over to Hotel Minella Leisure Centre to lend your support to the participants and donate.
All support would be appreciated by myself, and all the other participants, but most importantly the Dillon Quirke Foundation,” said John Leahy.
