Clonmel Rowing Club’s James Hurley and Gerald Nugent with their coach Pat Kinsella following their victory in the Junior Men’s Coxless Pairs in the Home Internationals at Lough Rynn, Leitrim on Satur
The Home International Rowing Championships took place on Saturday last, July 22 at Lough Rynn, County Leitrim. On an overcast day, conditions were ideal for rowing.
The powerful English team dominated proceedings for the most part but it fell to the Irish Junior Mens Coxless Pairs to disrupt the flow of results. On the day two rowers from Clonmel Rowing Club were earning their first international caps for Ireland, James Hurley and Gerald Nugent. The duo were competing again fresh from their second place in the Irish Rowing Championships the week previously where they lost narrowly to Skibbereen with both crews breaking the course record in that event so expectations were high going for Hurley and Nugent into the Home Internationals.
The English got off to a good start with Ireland, Scotland and Wales battling for second. At the 500m mark England still led by a canvas from Ireland with Scotland third. By 1,000 metres mark the Irish rowers had drawn level, and maintaining that strong pressure they edged ahead by the 1,500 metre mark. It was now do-or-die for the English who increased their stroke rate to 39, but despite the increased tempo they were unable to make any inroads into the lead of Hurley and Nugent in the Irish boat. The Irish pair came home two and a half lengths in front of England with Scotland another two lengths further back in third.
Coach Pat Kinsella was thrilled with the performance remaking that it was just reward for all the quality winter training the boys had put in.
WELL DONE DAIRE
Another Clonmel rower making waves on international waters is Daire Lynch. Rowing with Olympian Philip Doyle in the heavyweight double scull, they recently took part in the World Cup Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland, an important precursor event to the World Championship in September. The Irish duo produced a fantastic performance to finish third behind The Netherlands and Croatia featuring the Sinkovic brothers who are multiple Olympic and World champions. well done Daire.
CAPPOQUIN REGATTA
Returning to calmer waters the club are partaking in a fun regatta at Cappoquin on Sunday next, July 30. Best of luck to everyone.
