Traffic calming measures urgently needed in Tipperary

The need for improved traffic calming and safety measures on all approach roads into Tipperary Town was raised at this week’s Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District meeting.

A motion was put forward to improve the situation regarding speeding and dangerous driving. Councillor Tony Black said that he understood the enforcement of speeding laws is within the remit of An Garda Siochana but said he felt Tipperary County Council has a pivotal role to play in the process of ensuring the highest safety standards possible to protect motorists and pedestrians alike.

lf the funds are unavailable at present, he requested that all avenues are explored to secure funding to carry out these works that could potentially save lives. Speaking on the matter at the meeting he said:
“Road safety is one of the biggest conversation pieces. I think it is so important at present to ensure the highest standards of safety. A lot of the complaints I get are about the approach roads like the Dundrum Road and the Bansha Road.

“I think if proper calming measures were put in place on approach roads we'd see a lot less speeding and dangerous driving into the town itself. I always look at Bansha as a key example of traffic calming measures. I think that should be used as a template for the approach roads into our towns and villages in the district. I think we must continue to work for the safety of pedestrians and motorists, ” he said.

Councillor Annemarie Ryan seconded the motion and said people aren’t sticking to 50 kilometres on approach roads into Tipperary. Councillor Michael Fitzgerald supported the motion and said that the Bansha road in particular causes concern to people. He said that change is needed: “It should be a big funding issue to have some sort of traffic calming there to push it away from the doors that are near the N24 there.”

The motion was also supported by Councillor Crosse who stressed the dangerous situation on the Bansha road. There was consensus across the chamber regarding the motion.
