Mooreabbey Milers AC promoted the County 10 Mile Road Championships last Sunday in Galbally. The weather held up for most of the race, as athletes had little rain to contend with, but conditions were humid.
The Ladies race was also competitive. Here the County 5K senior champion, Dymphna Ryan of Dundrum AC was always well positioned throughout the race, and she came home a very worthy champion in 64 mins 1 secs. Then we had Caroline Hassett of Templemore AC also running very well when winning the silver medal in 65 mins with Linda Grogan of Dundrum AC winning the bronze medal in 67 mins 45 secs.
The master women awards were won by the following athletes. Over 40 1st Evelyn Maher Templemore AC 69:33, 2nd Mary Louise Ryan Mooreabbey Milers AC 71:45 and 3rd Sarah Whelan Clonmel AC 72:20. Eileen Bourke Thurles Crokes was 1st over 45 in 80:07 with her club mate Joan Stakelum 2nd in 91:17. Martina Ryan Thurles Crokes was 1st over 50 in 82:47 with Mary O’Connell Mooreabbey Milers AC 2nd in 84:29. Helen Ó Ceallaigh Clonmel AC was 1st over 55 in 88:10 with her clubmate Carmel Delaney 2nd in 95:34.
In the Inter Club competition, we had Thurles Crokes going for six in a row, but the day belonged to Moycarkey Coolcroo AC as they were winning this coveted Inter Club title for the very first time, a historic achievement by this club. Their successful team of Mossy, Paddy, Matthew Ryan 7th in 58:57 and Conor Keating 8th in 59:14, were very convincing winners. Dundrum won the silver medals with their team of Barry, Tom, Michael Ryan 23rd in 67:03 and Gerry O’Neill 25th in 67:25. The host club won the bronze medals with their team of Willie, Tom, Kevin Patrick Lenihan 18th 65:10 and Brian Carroll winning his first senior medal when finishing 27th in 68:07.
In the B Section Moycarkey Coolcroo AC did the double with their team of Kevin Shortall 15th in 64:27, Shane Mullaney and Paul Bowe 26th in 67:41, also winning his first senior medal. The silver medals were won by the Mooreabbey Milers AC team of Ger Hanley, Liam O’Donnell 33rd in 71:35 and Damien Holian 34th in 71:45. The Dundrum team of Jim Halley, Tony Delaney 36th in 72:15 and Liam Butler won the bronze medals.
In the women’s Inter Club competition, only one point separated first and second. The gold medals were won by the Dundrum team of Dymphna, Linda and Karen Coughlan 8th in 75:36. Templemore AC won the silver medals with their team of Caroline, Evelyn and Kate Kennedy 7th in 72:41.
The host club team of Mary Louise Ryan, Siobhan O’Dwyer 10th in 79:29 and Mary O’Connell won the bronze medals.
