Tipperary’s world class makers on display this August craft month

My favourite gemstones

A month-long celebration of local craft makers across Ireland is well underway and this August Craft Month exciting events are taking place in Tipperary.

Celebrating the vibrant local craft scene, people will have the chance to experience demonstrations, exhibitions and workshops across a variety of crafts right on their doorstep as well as supporting local makers by buying products and learning more about their work.

Local makers Marie-Therese Walker and Lucy Moore will be involved in the celebrations and events this year.

The programme provides unmissable opportunities to experience, participate in, support, buy and learn about the local stand-out craft sector and, with over 400 events on offer across the island, provides the perfect excuse to hit the road for a craft inspired adventure or staycation.

Here are some examples of the exciting events taking place locally this month:

My favourite gemstones -Location: 1st Floor, 20 Kenyon Street, Nenagh, Tipperary

Date: Saturday, 5th of August from 3pm to 4pm

Price: Free

Marie-Therese Walker of MTW Jewellery will give you a glimpse at some of her favourite and most treasured gemstones and show how she uses them in her work.

A goldsmith of 20 years, Marie-Therese specialises in one-off commissions. All her jewellery is handmade using traditional techniques in her workshop.

Her work is created using precious metals and carefully selected precious and semi-precious gemstones.

Natural dye workshop
Location: Cahir Arts, 26 Castle Street, Townparks, Cahir

Date: Saturday, 5th of August from 10am to 4pm

Price: €90

Led by maker Lucy Moore, learn about sustainability in textiles and immerse yourself in the absorbing and enjoyable world of natural dyeing.

Lucy will take you on a short, guided walk along the nearby river Suir to gather wild plant materials to make dye.

In this workshop she will explain the process of dyeing lines and cottons which is a little different to working with wools and silk. Participants will learn how to prepare the fabrics/yarns and will create a dye bath from plants.

Everyone will do some dyeing in the afternoon and try out some colour alterations and will go home with their own dyed cloth/yarn.

All materials and mid-morning refreshments will be provided. Participants are advised to wear old clothes in case of splashes.

Led by Design and Crafts Council Ireland, in partnership with Craft NI and Cork Craft Design, this month-long celebration, now in its second year, celebrates the vibrant local craft scene and gives people the chance to immerse themselves in the wonderful visual and hands on experience of craft.
