Shooting Star display will be spectacular over Tipperary skies tonight!

Get out and see the stars tonight in Tipperary

Stargazers will have a top class show in front of their eyes tonight, and on Sunday night too, as a spectacular Perseid meteor shower will be visible across Tipperary and indeed across the country tonight.

According to Astronomy Ireland there will be perfect viewing conditions tonight as the moon will be in a different area allowing for clear visibility where there is no clouds.

The shooting stars will be going all night and telescopes or binoculars will not be necessary as the show will be visible from the naked eye.

Astronomy Ireland magazine has urged members of the public to record how many stars are visible from where you see the stars, and then to send them the results as it will have scientific value for those who study the night sky.

Star gazers from Borrisokane to Carrick On Suir will be able to see up to 100 shooting stars an hour and Met Éireann is forecasting some clear spells overnight so get out for a look if you can at all.

A country area, with little light pollution is the optimum place to see the stars. The best place to watch the show is expected to be in the south and east of the country.

The event is called the Perseids because the meteors are believed to originate from the constellation of Perseus. More details are here: https://astronomy.ie/perseids-2023/
