The late Luke McSweeney has been described as "an exceptional young person" at his funeral mass today (September 1).
Father Billy Meehan, who baptised Luke and married his parents Paul and Brigid, spoke about his love for GAA, his strong spirituality, and his penchant for giving good advice.
He said, "Luke was very involved in the GAA and in recent times played soccer with Old Bridge. During Covid time, he loved being out in the yard with his younger brother, David, just hitting the ball around.
"David as you know plays for the Under 16s Tipperary team, and Luke was training David on how to get that vital score.
"During his time with David, one day Luke gave him a little advice and said to him: There are three things I would like you to learn. One, keep going to the gym, the other is to eat proper food, and the third is to remain loyal to your religion and to God."
He continued, "Luke was a spiritual person and saw life as a challenge and put it in perspective. He was a deeply religious persona nd passed on little gems of wisdom to all his friends.
"It has been heartening over the last couple of days as we witnessed numerous people coming and going through the house to pay respects, especially all the young people.
"As they passed through, they remembered some of the little gems of wisdom Luke had passed on to them.
"Hopefully they will take that and put it into practice."
