Cashel is in mourning as hurling legend Timmy Moloney is laid to rest

Timmy Moloney RIP

The sad passing of Timmy Moloney in recent days rocked the town of Cashel. A much loved figure who was always prominent in the GAA world, Timmy was known far and wide.

When the funeral cortege passed through the town this Tuesday morning the route was lined with a guard of honour of members from Cashel King Cormacs hurling, football and camogie club, Cashel rugby club and Sean Treacys GAA club in London.

A sportsman to the core, Timmy was heavily involved with Cashel King Cormacs at many levels.

Club officers Aodan Wrenn and Donie O'Donaghue on behalf of the club offered their deepest condolences to the Moloney family as well as Timmy's extended family and Timmy's wide circle of friends.

The King Cormac's club released the following tribute on behalf of the club:

"Red and Green to the core, it was evident from a very young age that Timmy possessed the raw talent to play hurling at the highest level.

"He proudly represented his club, and the Blue and Gold of Tipperary, all the way up from juvenile to minor, and then at senior club and intercounty level. Timmy was captain of the Tipperary Under 21 Hurlers in 1992.

"Timmy was a fierce competitor; with unbelievable ability in the air and he also possessed a thunderous slap of a sliothar. Any dead ball situations from 25 yards or less would almost certainly end up in the back of the net.

"It was not only in hurling that Timmy excelled. He played his part in winning a county Under 21 'A' Football title in 1991, for Cashel King Cormacs, kicking some memorable points in that fantastic victory, but hurling was his passion and first love.

"When work took him to London, Timmy became an ever present on the London senior team. He almost single handedly won games week in week out, such was his class.

"When Timmy hung up his boots he soon turned his attention to the next generation of King Cormacs players. His no nonsense, direct coaching and management skills were evident in the many teams fortunate to have him guide their journey.

"Success followed winning a West 'A' Minor and then a county junior B title in 2020, among the most recent success stories. His strong leadership and his attention to detail rubbed off on the many players under his management. Timmy had every players' back.

"Players did not want to let him down, they looked up to him. He took great pride in watching his son Daniel and daughter Ciara in action, and enjoyed many successes alongside them both.

"Forever wanting to help out the club moving forward, Timmy took up a position on the Club's Executive Committee in 2020. The current facilities at Leahy Park are testament to the vision and willingness to roll up his sleeves and get the work done.

"Our club's most recent fundraiser, in conjunction with Cashel RFC (a club Timmy also represented with distinction), had all the hallmarks of Timmy's desire to help out. His trojan efforts in raising funds ensured that that undertaking was nothing short of phenomenal. The fundraiser - Tipp's Fittest Family - was a resounding success.

"In recent times when Timmy's health prevented him from doing what he loved best, he would be ever present at games both juvenile and adult. The bottom corner of Leahy Park, below our club stand, became his vantage point; from where he'd analyse, dissect and offer his opinion on whatever was happening on the pitch.

"Many an evening in that very spot, the craic was mighty and everyone went home afterwards feeling better for the banter they had in Timmy's company.

"Many stories and memories will resurface in the days ahead. We will all cherish them and keep them with us forever.

"To Eileen, Daniel, Ciara, Josie, Elaine, Joey, Michael, John and Barry; we extend our heartfelt condolences. You are all in our thoughts and prayers during this very sad and difficult time."

The Sean Treacys GAA club in London, who Timmy lined out for while in London, also paid tribute to the Cashel man in recent days: "Timmy Moloney was a true stalwart of Sean Treacys, with a lengthy membership that spanned years of dedication and excellence.

"His name became synonymous with victory when he played a pivotal role in the last London senior hurling final that Sean Treacys triumphed in.

"Timmy's exceptional skills on the field made him the club's top scorer that day, contributing a remarkable 1-7 to secure the coveted championship.

"Not only did Timmy excel within the confines of his club, but he also earned recognition on a broader stage. His exceptional talent caught the eye of the GAA, leading to his inclusion on the prestigious GAA Team of the Week while representing London.

"Timmy Moloney was more than just a gifted athlete; he was a natural talent whose presence on the field inspired those around him. His contributions to Sean Treacys went beyond statistics; he embodied the spirit of the club, uniting members in their pursuit of success.

"Timmy's memory will forever be cherished within the Sean Treacys club, serving as a reminder of the dedication, skill, and passion he brought to the game of hurling. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of club members to come."
