Peter Ryan reaches his destination today after an epic run across Ireland!

Peter Ryan on his trek across Ireland this week

Paralympian Peter Ryan is closer to completing his amazing feat of running through Ireland from Malin Head to Mizen Head this afternoon.

Huge numbers have come out to support the Drombane native on different parts of the journey and he is currently in county Cork.

Peter has been clocking up over 100 kilometres a day all this week - from north to south - and today he runs from Millstreet in Cork all the way to Mizen with plenty of support for his rare feat.

Peter and his team have been up early each morning, before dawn, and his support crew are getting back on the road on the final day of the Tipperary man’s journey.

The challenge has taken place over five days, with the longest leg seeing Peter run the equivalent of over three marathons in just one day.

Funds raised from the 586km challenge will be donated to the National Council for the Blind of Ireland (NCBI) to aid the development of the country’s first mobile unit, the Vision Van.

After being diagnosed with a rare genetic condition called Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy at the age of 19, Peter worked through the challenges of his vision loss by channelling his passion and love of sport.

So far people have donated in huge numbers to the cause over €50,000 for a great cause.

"I received huge support from NCBI upon my diagnosis which has enabled me to learn a new way of living.

"I am taking on this challenge as a way of giving back to the charity, to raise awareness about vision loss and impairment and to challenge the stigma that is associated with disability," he said.

Here is his progress so far:
Day 1 - Malin to Omagh - 108km ✅
Day 2 - Omagh to Edgeworthstown - 121km✅
Day 3 - Edgeworthstown to Nenagh - 113km✅
Day 3 - Nenagh to Millstreet - 125km✅
