As Christmas approaches, the spirit of giving and togetherness is thriving in our local community, thanks to the creative and enthusiastic efforts of our young people.
In a heartwarming initiative, students from local schools have taken the lead in organising Christmas German Markets, in the hope of bringing the charm and warmth of the festive season to the beautiful Kickham Plaza in Clonmel.
This magical event, being organised by the students in conjunction with the County Council, LEO Tipperary and Fóroige, aims to embrace the rich traditions of the German Christmas markets which are renowned for their cozy atmosphere, twinkling lights, beautiful gifts and an array of festive treats.
The students, inspired by this tradition, are working tirelessly to turn the Kickham Plaza in Clonmel into a stunning, magical venue for locals to gather, chat with family and friends, buy some Christmas presents, soak up the festive atmosphere and create bonds and memories.
The students are offering local businesses, artisans and crafts people a platform to showcase their products and set up food and coffee stalls.
Síle Ní Mharanáin from Gaelcholáiste Chéitinn is delighted to be part of this wonderful initiative and said “It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to co-host such a collaborative and joyous event alongside our neighbouring schools which will easily bring the whole town and wider community together in Christmas spirit. Our students are excited to showcase their singing and musical talents as well as the products from their mini companies and to become inspired by the talents of others’ products over the weekend. Tá sceitimíní orainn deireadh seachtaine lán le ceardaíocht, canadh agus ceol a chaitheamh i measc an cheantair áitiúil.’’
The two day event will take place on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 December from 12pm to 5pm.
Live music will entertain the community with Santa hoping to stop off on his way from the North Pole. The markets will close on the Sunday with a candlelight carol service made up of a joint choir, adding a festive end to what promises to be a great event on the stunning plaza.
‘’The Loreto are so happy to be involved in this event, helping to bring joy to Clonmel after such a sad time for our community. We also think the TY's will learn so much from this experience as this will be a part of their education that they will never forget,” said Michele Culliton, Loreto, who added that her students were enjoying working with the other schools.
The students are overwhelmed by the support and goodwill they are receiving and are hugely grateful to the County Council, the Local Enterprise Office and Fóroige for coming on board.
They are also very grateful to ESB Networks, especially the Clonmel Branch, for making a contribution to some of the lighting for the authentic German stalls that are presently being made.
Eimear Barry, CBS High School is full of admiration for these young, energetic and enthusiastic young students. ‘
“Their dedication and passion exemplify the positive impact our young people can have on the local community when given the opportunity to express their creativity and compassion,’’ said Eimear.
As the students main aim is giving back to their community, all they are requesting from the participants is a nominal charge of €20 for the two day event to sell their products. To request a registration form please email moreilly@cbshighschool
