Cashel Town Hostel (blue building) was set to house 74 IPAs but plans have since been shelved
In excess of 400 people attended the recent public meeting in Cashel which related to the 74 International Protection Applicants who were expected to be moved into the town.
Plans for the move have since been changed and the transfer will not now take place.
The recent meeting was, for the most part, civil and informative but the nervousness, apprehension and anger of the locals was clear.
Judging by comments made on the night, as well as the levels of support for speakers and the loudness of the applause, the vast majority would prefer that the Cashel Town Hostel remains for tourists or for those in need already living locally who can’t find alternative accommodation.
Many speakers on the night felt the hostel, located in the heart of the town, is not suitable for refugee accommodation. The rushed Government Department decision created unnecessary tension.
The news broke via email four days before the meeting took place and the full 74 International Protection Applicants were expected to arrive in Cashel the following week in early November.
Many at the meeting in Cashel directed their angst at the politicians present on the night, but the public representatives didn’t have information or answers either.
The proposed quick change of use of the property highlights the changing world we live in. Globally, wars rage in a number of regions such as Gaza and Ukraine which is forcing many to flee their homeland.
Climate change has wreaked havoc with farming practices, food production, natural habitats and wildlife across the world.
People from affected regions often flee to Europe and this evolving situation is causing political changes across the region.
Rising food and energy prices globally highlight the strain the planet is under with over eight billion people now living on planet Earth.
There are other challenges too here in Ireland with fears regarding the lack of available GPs, the overcrowded schools situation and the absence of adequate support in terms of education and integration for new arrivals.
The current Government are slow to build the necessary homes, hospitals and schools to deal with our growing population this century. It is a time for calm heads and good communication.
The Government must start communicating and consulting with people to ensure everyone is focused and on the same page; otherwise more chaos will ensue.
