Historic buildings in Tipperary Town to be transformed under new project

The Tipperary Courthouse and Bridewell in Tipperary Town are to get a new lease of life under a new proposal.
Plans to repurpose and fully restore Tipperary Courthouse and Bridewell are being welcomed in Tipperary Town, with MooreHaven set to become the new custodians of the historic buildings.
HUB
An architect led design team is currently working on plans that will see the Courthouse and Bridewell campus repurposed as a hub for adults with intellectual disabilities, bringing a long vacant building back into everyday use.

PARTNERSHIP
The project is a partnership between MooreHaven, Tipperary County Council and Tipperary Town Revitalisation.
Since its formation in 1981, MooreHaven has grown steadily and now provides a broad range of supports and services to 120 users through the work and commitment of over 80 staff.
Demand for its services is expected to grow in the coming years and the Courthouse and Bridewell project is part of an ambitious expansion plan.

MooreHaven’s Chairman, Denis Kennedy, and his colleagues believe the Courthouse and Bridewell is an ideal fit for their service for a range of reasons, including its location and size.

MOOREHAVEN
We have been looking to expand to a new hub close to our main location on Tipperary Town’s O’Brien Street for some time, as our current locations in Tipperary and Cashel are at capacity. We are very pleased to work with Tipperary County Council on this project and, on behalf of all connected with MooreHaven, in particular our services users and their families and our staff, I want to thank the Council and their staff for working with us and for giving us this opportunity” said Mr. Kennedy.

NEW LIFE
Tipperary County Council District Administrator for Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District Anselm McGowan says that the project will bring new life to the building which has unfortunately been vacant for some time.

REAL VALUE
“The main Courthouse building was re-roofed in 2022 but our aim has always been to find a productive and sustainable long-term use for the buildings. Services like the ones provided by MooreHaven add real value to the town and make an enormous difference to people’s lives so naturally we are delighted to be able to work with MooreHaven and support this project,” said Mr McGowan.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The proposal caters for the full refurbishment of all buildings and the grounds.
A full public consultation will take place in the coming weeks as part of the 'Part 8' planning application process.
Drawings and the full project plan will be viewable online and at Council offices, with the public and stakeholders invited to share their views on the proposal.
