BREAKING: A 'game changer' for Clonmel and Tipperary, as contracts signed for sale of former Clonmel Arms Hotel

Contracts have been signed by the vendor and the purchaser for the sale of the former Clonmel Arms Hotel and the new developers are on site this morning.

Contractors are on site to meet the safety requirements and it's understood that most of the building will eventually be demolished before its redevelopment as a hotel.

The former hotel closed 18 years ago this month and the building has fallen into a state of disrepair and dereliction since then.

It’s understood that the new owners, who are purchasing the building from Dungarvan-based developer Michael Ryan, include a local investor and developer.

Planning permission for a 114-bedroom hotel on the site was granted four years ago.

Dining, bar, conference and function facilities, as well as a basement car park and leisure centre, are included in the plans.

"This is an absolute game changer for the town centre," says Cllr John FitzGerald.

He said he had been working on the sale of the building as a councillor and in his professional capacity as an auctioneer and he's delighted that work had started on its redevelopment as a hotel.

"It's a great story for the town and it will take away a huge chunk of dereliction, with the site straddling Sarsfield Street, O'Connell Street and the Quay.

"It’s all systems go to get to the next chapter on this historic project," said Cllr. FitzGerald.

Meanwhile, Cllr Michael Murphy says that this is very positive news in the context of what is a key strategic site within the town's prime retail area.

He wished the new owners well and said that Tipperary County Council was available to assist in any way it could.

"Hopefully this investment by the new owners will be a catalyst for further private investment in our town centre," Cllr Murphy added.
