Tipperary Transport Committee delighted with success of new town bus service in Clonmel

Passengers can avail of reduced town bus fares by purchasing a Leap card, while anyone with a travel pass can travel for free

10,000 passengers have now used the Clonmel Town Bus Service since it began on December 11.

Welcoming these latest figures, Cllr Siobhán Ambrose, who is the Clonmel representative on the Tipperary Transport Committee, said that these figures confirm that the demand for this service is high, with 3,000 people using this service in the last week alone.

“Huge efforts were made to ensure that this service was rolled out before Christmas, and as a result brochures with the bus timetables are currently being drawn up and should be available next week,” she stated.

“I have been inundated with people telling me what a positive benefit the new town bus service has been for them.

“These include people who don’t drive and also those who now have the choice to use the town bus service instead of using their own car to travel to work.

“Many others are now using the bus to go shopping or socialising in town”.

Cllr Ambrose said that all of the Clonmel town buses are wheelchair-friendly, and anyone with a travel pass can travel for free.

All other passengers can avail of reduced town bus fares by purchasing a Leap card, which are available in the post office.

Cllr Ambrose said that the committee will continue to monitor the progress of the Clonmel town bus service. Considering the huge success of the phase one rollout of this service, she said she will be pushing for a second phase rollout of this service as soon as possible to include more locations around the town, and hopefully in time to also provide a service for the villages around Clonmel.

She again thanked the Tipperary Transport Co-ordination Unit Committee, the staff in Tipperary County Council, the bus contractor and their team of drivers and the Department of Transport for funding this scheme.
