Category wins for Dymphna and Denise at Tipperary Masters Cross Country Championships

COUNTY MASTERS CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP


The County Masters Cross Country Championship was held in Fethard on Sunday last. We extend our gratitude to the Rice family and Fethard AC for hosting the event and providing a new cross country course, and for the fantastic hospitality they provided.


It was a wet and very windy day, with a lot of headwinds. These were very tough running conditions for athletes, as it was muddy underfoot also. We had a total of 18 athletes competing.


In the women’s 4k race we had eight women. First home for the club and the overall winner of the race was Dymphna Ryan (1st O/40). She was followed by Linda Grogan (2nd O/40) and finishing on the podium in second place. Next was Catherine Fogarty in fifth place and 1st in O/45; 11th Karen Coughlan 7th O/40; 15th Mary Keane and 2nd place in O/35; 18th Emily Leahy, 11th O/40; 19th Mairead Julian and third in the O/45 and 25th Denise Compton, who was first in the O/55 category.
Dymphna, Linda and Karen secured gold in the O/35 category, while in the 0/45 team Catherine, Mairead and Denise won silver.


In the Men’s 7k race we had eight competing. First home for the club and making a well-deserved debut on the podium was Barry Hartnett, 1st O/40. He was followed by Martin Keane 3rd O/40, 17th Jim Halley,4th O/55; 19th John Ryan, 4th O/35; 25th Val Farrell, 3rd O/50; 27th Michael Ryan, 8th O/40; 29th William Keane, 9th O/40 and 34th Shane White, 10th O/40.
Barry, Martin, Jim and John won gold. The B team of Val, Michael, William and Shane placed fourth team.


In the O/65 4k men’s race we had three from the club competing. In 5th place was Liam Butler, 6th place John Moore and PJ Holmes was 7th.

GLENGARRA WOODS RACE
The IMRA Glengarra Woods Race was held in Glengarra on Sunday last. It was a very windy day and a race of two halves. The first half was all uphill with climbs of 194m, then a mixture of fire roads and a soft single marsh trail near the finish. We had one senior athlete and one juvenile competing.


Darren Gayson placed 8th in the 7.3k while his daughter Ella was third in the short course of 3k.
