Passing of popular sportsman who helped club to minor and senior county hurling titles

Sympathy to his family and Moycarkey/Borris GAA Club on the passing of Bill Gooney earlier this month

The death occurred on Wednesday January 3, surrounded by his family of Bill Gooney , Ballytarsna,Horse and Jockey. After a long illness, in the wonderful care of the staff of Tipperary University Hospital, Clonmel.


His remains were reposed at his residence on Friday January 5.


Removal on Saturday morning to St. Peter in Chains Church Moycarkey for 12 noon Requiem Mass. Burial took place in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Moycarkey.


Bill Gooney was a prominent member of the Gooney family along with brothers Mick and Paddy.


He was an accomplished hurler in his day with Moycarkey Borris G.A.A., playing at midfield that won the inaugural county minor ‘A’ title Hurling Championship 1968.


Bill lined up in the county senior hurling final in 1982 against Roscrea in the drawn game, but was not able to play in the reply due to hand injury.


Bill’s consistency over that stellar season contributed hugely to his team county and Munster senior hurling championship.
His coffin was draped with the flag of Moycarkey Borris G.A.A., with a guard of honour provided as his remains arrived at St. Peter in Chains Church for Requiem Mass.


Bill in youth competed with Moycarkey Athletic Club completing at all grade from under14 onwards, winning the vocational North Tipperary Championships, under 16 league was the Individual winner. Representing County in County in Youths, novice and junior grades. He also was a prominent member of the Gooney family with brothers Pick and Paddy in 1967.


Deeply mourned by his wife Lally and family of Dawn, Gary, Paul, brothers Jack Frank and Ollie, sisters Mary and Betty, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, extended Gooney and Costello families, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Bill may you rest in peace.
