Reigning Premier League champions Peake Villa were pushed all the way by Powerstown in the opening round of the Tipperary Cup on Sunday last.
Clonmel Credit Union Tipperary Cup
Peake Villa 1 – 0 Powerstown
Peake Villa were highly fancied in this game, but struggled to really impose themselves on a stubborn Powerstown side that made them fight for everything to claim a victory in this first round of the Tipperary Cup.
The Thurles side were quicker out of the blocks and created some early chances before taking the lead in the 18th minute when Kieran Hennessy found the net.
However, they lost a player to a red card just before the hour mark, and this seemed to really knock them out of their stride and they had to defend some strong Powerstown attacks before they saw out the first half.
The Clonmel visitors continued to create most of the second half chances, but wily defending by the reigning league champions meant that Powerstown’s real sights of goal were fairly limited.
Peake Villa saw out the game without picking up any injury worries ahead of their replayed FAI Junior Cup tie in Dublin this Saturday against Crumlin United.
