'Just disbelief. I couldn't believe it,' said Nenagh CBS captain in joyous post-match

As scrappy a goal as you could have imagined, the last-gasp winner for Nenagh CBS was met with huge elation and the captain of the victorious team - Darragh McCarthy - was in total shock straight after the dramatic finale.

“Just disbelief to be honest. I couldn’t believe it,” he said in disbelief.

“I still don’t know what is going on in a way. I thought it was gone again, but this group is phenomenal. They are the best group of lads I’ve ever played with and the heart of all of them is second to none.

McCarthy was still in disbelief that he had become the first Nenagh CBS captain to lift the Harty Cup and looking back on the goal that did it, he still had no idea who had got the golden touch to send the ball to the back of the net.

“Was it Andy or Jake?! Credit to either of them.”

“A ball going in like that can be absolutely lethal and the same thing happened the last day (in the semi-final) and it was nearly a carbon copy of it.

“It doesn’t matter what way it goes in!”

The support that made their way to Ennis to support the team was incredible last Saturday with 3,000 supporters in attendance at the game, and young McCarthy lauded their support on the day and gave enormous credit to the parents of the players.

“It is a proud moment for all of us, but especially for all our parents who sacrifice day in and day out for us. It’s more for them than anyone.

“That’s nearly the team talk every day. Look up to that stand where there are people there who are so proud of you and pay good money to come see you play, so don’t let them down. That’s been our motto for the last few games.”
Summing up his emotions in the immediate aftermath, the Toomevara player praised the school and the support they received. Still, he said he wasn’t holding out much hope for his upcoming mock exams as he prepares to sit his Leaving Certificate in the summer!

“Pure proudness. We can’t thank the school enough for everything they’ve done for us along with the management team, especially Seanie Kenneally who couldn't be here today.

“The mocks could be a write-off now, to be honest with you!” he finished laughing.
