Conor Sweeney is very close to a return to action for the Tipperary footballers. The Ballyporeen stalwart suffered a cruciate knee injury last year against Down in the first round of the league and since then his absence has been greatly felt by the Tipp team. Sweeney, who captained Tipperary to the Munster title in 2020, is back training and will resume contact, game style training this week.

It will be a welcome addition to Paul Kelly’s side who are struggling to get results this springtime despite being competitive in close games. While launching the Friends of Tipperary Football Euro Millions Syndicate on Sunday last - which involves a new Euro Millions Plus Syndicate offering all members 1,500 chances to win cash - Conor Sweeney said he is happy with his progress over the last few months “it’s been a long road but I should be back in full contact with the lads in less than ten days so another two weeks will see me kind of back and maybe hopefully ready for selection then all going well.”

For those interested in joining the syndicate it costs €20 to enter with tickets on sale at the ‘Friends of Tipperary Football’ website or via Tipperary players or through committee members across the county. A Michael Hogan car sticker and membership of the Friends for the coming season is part of the €20 package.

Conor Sweeney says the ‘Friends of Tipperary Football’ and fundraisers like this are key to the game thriving at all levels: “It’s essential. We wouldn’t be able to cope without it. This has worked well over the last couple of years I found so we would just encourage everyone to get behind it and buy a ticket. It’s going to filter right down through from senior to underage, U20s, U17s and even the Michael Hogan underage competition they have every year.

“These funds are badly needed and as we all know the cost of running teams has gone through the roof, standards are always increasing so we need to match that and be there essentially if we want to compete at all so it’s vital for the Tipperary football team going forward.”
