A Carrick-on-Suir girls secondary school has become the first school in county Tipperary to be awarded a Quality Mark for the inclusive support it provides LGBTQ+ students.

Scoil Mhuire (Greenhill) recently finished an 18-month journey embedding LGBTQ+ inclusion across its staff, students, policies and practices that has earned it the LGBTQ+ Quality Mark, awarded by Belong To, Ireland’s national LGBTQ+ youth organisation.

Scoil Mhuire and 36 other schools nationwide received the award at a celebratory accreditation event at The Foundry at Google Headquarters in Dublin last Friday that was addressed by Minister for State Jack Chambers.

The LGBTQ+ Quality Mark initiative is a holistic approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion in post-primary schools that involves the whole school community.

In Ireland, 76% of LGBTQ+ second-level students feel unsafe at school. The schools involved in the LGBTQ+ Quality Mark have worked tirelessly to create an environment where all students feel safe and supported.

Scoil Mhuire Principal Mary O’Keeffe said Scoil Mhuire became involved in the Quality Mark programme to commit to an inclusive and safe school environment for all and to raise levels of awareness and education among all members of their school community.

“We have seen positive improvement in awareness, environment and practice and hope to continue to support all of our school members into the future,” she added.
