Sharlene Mawdsley will miss out on 400 metres final at World Indoor Athletics Championships

Sharlene Mawdsley returns to the track in Glasgow tomorrow morning, Sunday

Ecstasy turned to agony for Sharlene Mawdsley when she was disqualified from the Women’s 400 metres final at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow.

The Newport athlete initially qualified for tonight's final when she finished third in last night's semi-final behind the winner Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands and Talitha Diggs of the United States.

However she was subsequently disqualified for obstructing Austria's Susanne Gogl-Walli.

Athletics Ireland disagreed with the decision and then launched a counter-appeal, but the disqualification was confirmed shortly after 11pm last night.

25-year-old Mawdsley will be back in action tomorrow morning, Sunday, when she competes with the Irish women's 4 x 400 metres relay team in the heats at 11.38am.
