Calls made by Councillors for a pedestrian crossing in a big Tipperary town

Tipperary County Council has been asked to install a pedestrian crossing on Borrisokane’s Main Street.

“People don’t realise the speed they are doing. They need to understand there is a 50km speed limit in towns and villages,” Cllr Joe Hannigan told the February meeting of Nenagh Municipal District Council.

It was pointed out by Cllr Michael O’Meara that the original plans for the resurfacing of the town’s Main Street had included the provision of a pedestrian crossing.

“We should have one somewhere in the town,” he said.

Cllr Ger Darcy said the issue of a crossing had been discussed a number of years ago, and highlighted  that the current volume of traffic on Main Street made it “extremely busy”.

Municipal District senior engineer Barry Murphy said that the original plan for a pedestrian crossing had been eliminated during the public consultation period for the resurfacing works.

“It is something we will have to look at. It is an extremely busy road,” he said.

District manager Marcus O’Connor said that the Council would need to choose any location for a pedestrian crossing carefully.
