Tipperary's CRC rowers win six pennants at Cork City Head of River

Tipperary's CRC rowers win six pennants at Cork City Head of River

The Clonmel Rowing Club men’s j14 8x+ launching at the slip for last Saturday’s Head of the River event on the River Lee at Cork City.

March - in like a lion and out like a lamb- so the old saying goes. The lion was truly in the ascendancy when CRC went to Cork HOR on Saturday last, March 2. With snow on the Galtees and a howling wind funnelling down the river Lee, conditions were fresh, very fresh. This didn’t stop CRC from putting out a total of 26 crews across all the different age categories.

In an unfortunate incident, a car entered the water near the start. This resulted in disruption at the starting line and errors in some of the times recorded. At the close of business CRC had won six pennants and three second places.

We put out three boats in the Women’s Masters 2x and claimed the first two spots. The winning crew was Michelle Gregory and Emma Ferris who was making her comeback to the sport after a gap of 25 years. The Women’s masters 4x,the mens j18 4x and the mens J18 1x can feel a little hard done by after a glitch in the timing ruled them out of contention.
Cian Mellerick had a great win in the mens J18 1x in a time of 10'32" against a 17 strong field.

Our mens junior 16s performed well coming 2nd in the 4x and Benjamin Wall finishing 5th in j16 1x out o a massive field of 22. In the mens masters 4x- Clonmel got the better of a strong Shandon crew.

In the mens masters 2x, Paul Nugent rowing with the 78 years young Tony Corcoran, came home in the runner up spot against younger opposition.

Luckily for Paul he managed to win the masters 1x, otherwise he’d never hear the end of it from his son Gerald who along with James Hurley won the Intermediate coxless pair and the 2x.

Clonmel also had a good row from the mens 4x+ TO finishing 2nd and the mens j14 8x+ finishing 3rd. With a bit more experience under their belt these crews will move up the ladder.

Brendan Wall fresh from his silver medal win in Prague won the maximum amount of boats you can fit on a trailer competition.
The club would like to thank the juniors and adult rowers for their cooperation in putting boats together and launching on the slip etc. Teamwork at its best.

The HOR season is now drawing to a close and we look forward to the regatta season starting in early April.
