One Tipperary club made history at Munster 4-Mile Road Championships

Billy Prout who helped his club, Fethard AC, win team silver in the over 65 event at the Munster 4 Mile Championships hosted by Dundrum AC on Sunday last

It was yet another historic day for Fethard Athletic Club at the Munster 4 Mile Road Race Championship on Sunday last, hosted by our friends at Dundrum AC.

Thank you to all the organisers and stewards for keeping everyone safe on the roads.

This course is a very fast course and fast times were recorded by many of the large fields, who were proudly representing their clubs from throughout the province.

For the first time in our club’s history Fethard AC had both Ladies and Men competing in all categories.

It turned out to be a memorable day for the club. First up was the women’s race combined with the men’s Over 65, 4 mile road race and the sun was shining down on the field of over 100 as they went to the line at 1pm.

We had Abigeal Maher, 58th in 0:28:54, Carol Molloy, 83rd in 0:31:50, Billy Prout 85th in 0:32;00, Marie Carroll, 89th in 032:51, and Isobel Minogue 98th in 0:35:08.

Congratulations to Billy who scored on the county over 65 team, taking the second team place.

For some of our athletes Sunday last was a huge learning opportunity, the first time competing in a championship road race of this stature. All felt the day was good and conditions were great, with good support and atmosphere.

The second race was the men’s Senior, Novice and Masters 4 mile with a field of 120 runners. The Fethard AC Men’s team was led home by Louis Rice in 12th place in 0:21:10, Fintan Rice in 73rd 0:24:08, James Maher in 80th place 24:31 and Jack Spillane 91st place in 25:33. Fintan was second over 55. This result secured him an individual Munster silver medal and he also scored on the team that secured the over 50 county team silver for Tipperary.

Congratulations to all the Fethard AC members on their performances on Sunday, and as always it was great to have the support of John, Siobhan, Susan and Mike.
