U19 School Rugby Mungret Cup Semi Final
HIGH SCHOOL CBS 29 MIDLETON CBS 17
Clonmel High School CBS U19 Rugby team reached the Mungret Cup Final for the second year running following a very entertaining match against Midleton CBS on our 4G rugby pitch on Wednesday last.
The home team dominated the opening half with the bulk of possession. David Coyne scored his first of his three tries early on following some strong drives from the High School pack.
Minutes later, a break down the wing saw a lovely off load from Luke Slattery to put winger James Cleary away to score a fine try in the corner.
Alex Slattery made a break from halfway just before half time to score under the posts. He kicked the conversion to give the High School a 17-0 lead at the break.
Midleton CBS had the wind advantage in the second half but it was the home side who scored next. David Coyne was on hand to touch down from close range to extend the lead to 22-0.
Midleton had freshened things up at the break and this paid off with a converted try of their own to reduce the High School’s lead to 22-7.
The High School’s reply was instantaneous following another sweeping attack and David Coyne was on hand to complete his hatrick. Alex Slattery kicked the conversion to push the High School ahead 29-7.
To their credit, Midleton battled on scoring two more tries but the day belonged to the High School securing a 29-17 win in front of their strong vocal support.
The result sends the High School into their second Mungret Cup Final in two years. They lost last year's final to Coláiste Pobal Bantry. This year they face Colaiste Choilm Ballincollig in Virgin Media Park, Cork, after Easter.
Well done to squad and coaches on the victory.
