Sharon Shannon celebrates 30 years of music
Sharon Shannon is an Irish musician from the village of Ruan in county Clare.
She is best known for her work with the accordion and her violin fiddle technique but has also played the tin whistle and melodeon.
Her 1991 album Sharon Shannon is the best-selling album of traditional Irish music ever released there.
Beginning with British Isles folk music, her work demonstrates a wide-ranging number of musical influences, including reggae, cajun music, Portuguese music, and French-Canadian music.
Her single What You Make It (da, da, da, da) featured hip hop music artists Marvel and Lady K.
Her work has also been remixed as dance music.
In June 1989 Sharon Shannon was rehearsing and demoing tracks for her first album, when she was whisked away to Glastonbury festival with The Waterboys.
In the 30 years that has elapsed since then, Sharon has recorded ten studio albums: five Live albums , four Best Of compilations and three live Concert DVDs. She has received many awards including being the youngest ever recipient of the
Meteor Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2009.
She has collaborated, recorded, and toured with everyone from Willy Nelson, Bono, Johnny Depp, Shane Mc Gowan and John Prine to Nigel Kennedy and the RTE Concert Orchestra and had many hit records including The Galway Girl with Steve Earle, Its Christmastime Again with Wallis Bird, and Go Tell the Devil with Imelda May. Fáilte Ireland and TG4 joined forces with Sharon on a new travel and music programme ‘Heartlands’ in 2021.
The four-week series, featured Sharon, and her niece Caoilinn Ní Dhonnabháin showcasing the Shannon River region across Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands while catching up with a host of musical friends, such as Liam O’Maonlaoi (Hothouse Flowers), Steve Wickham (The Waterboys), Eleanor Shanley, Nathan Carter, The Henshaws, Seamus Begley, Mundy, Gerry ‘Banjo’ O’Connor, and Susan O’Neill.
In 2023, Sharon released a compilation album 'Now and Then' to celebrate 30 years at the forefront of Irish Music and this intimate show at The Source showcases those years.
