On Wednesday morning March 6, children from Ballyneale NS joined the team from 100 Million Trees Project as well as a member of the Ballyneale Community Field Development Committee to plant an area of the Ballyneale community field with native Irish trees.
The gloomy conditions were certainly brightened up by the smiles and enthusiasm of children from junior & Senior infants and 3rd and 4th class accompanied by their teachers Ms O’Dwyer and Ms Whelan who got to work planting a quarter acre site with some 2,000 native Irish tree saplings. The mornings work gave them a great opportunity to get “hands on” and partake in a fantastic initiative that they will be able to see grow and take shape into a fantastic local amenity over the years to come.
The 100 Million Trees Project is a new national initiative which aims to see the planting of 100 million native Irish trees across the island of Ireland throughout the next decade and Ballyneale Community Field Development Committee were delighted to avail of their services in conjunction with Rev. Jimmy Browne.
The project’s ambitious aim will be achieved through densely planting native Irish trees to create areas of biodiversity and carbon sinks throughout Ireland.

Wednesday mornings activities was the first stage in a planned project that will turn Ballyneale community field into a top-class facility for the local and wider community for generations to come with plans underway to develop a community clubhouse and meeting room, carpark, playground, biodiversity area, astro pitch and walking track.
Special thanks to Rev. Jimmy Browne, teachers Ms O’Dwyer and Ms Whelan, school Principal Mr Dooley and school Secretary Sandra Sheehan for organising the participation of the children as well as the members of The 100 Million Trees Project team and the local Ballyneale Community Field Development Committee for their hard work on the day.
We look forward to seeing the fruits of their labour grow in years to come.
