Ramps 'the only solution' to stop speeding traffic in Tipperary housing estates

District Mayor Richie Molloy said it was very hard to curtail speeding traffic without ramps

Residents of Ballyclerihan Crescent in Clerihan have requested the installation of speed ramps on the road surface to cope with increased traffic levels, Cllr John FitzGerald stated at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.

He said that traffic from an additional 14 houses would be travelling through that roadway.

Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said that chicanes and covered areas with signs could be provided but the could be provided but the only thing to slow down speeding traffic is ramps.

Cllr Pat English agreed that ramps were the only solution.

District Mayor Richie Molloy said there was a lot of speeding in older estates with long driveways and it was very hard to curtail it without ramps, even if the council had a policy not to install ramps.

Council engineer James Murray said that instead of ramps, they would prefer to provide enhanced pedestrian infrastructure to reduce speed. He said that this is the way the urban environment is developing.

He said that this infrastructure included reduced speed limits, vertical deflections and raised crossings in low speed areas.
