Another national athletics title for Tipperary's Katie Bergin

Moyne AC athlete wins 200 metres title for UCC in Belfast

Another national athletics title for Tipperary's Katie Bergin

Wearing the colours of UCC, Katie Bergin won the 200 metres title at the IUAA Intervarsities Track and Field outdoor championships

The Mary Peters Track in Belfast was the ideal setting for the IUAA Intervarsities Track and Field outdoor championships on Friday and Saturday last.

The venue avoided the worst of Storm Kathleen, and although there was no rain the athletes still had to contend with strong winds on what was the first outdoor outing of the 2024 season for track and field athletes.

Moyne AC, Tipperary athlete Katie Bergin, wearing the colours of UCC on this occasion, took to the track on Friday afternoon in the heats of the 200 metres and was a convincing winner of her heat, which placed her in lane six in the final on Saturday.

As on previous occasions, Katie stormed out of the blocks and took a commanding lead in the first forty/fifty metres and held that position all the way to the finish.

It was job done for Katie and another national title to add to the two Irish Under 23 championships at 60 metres and 200 metres that she has already won this year.

On Saturday also she was part of the UCC 4x100 metres relay team that won silver.

Katie is away on warm weather training in Tenerife now for a couple of weeks and hopefully the benefit of that will be seen when she returns to the Mary Peters Track in early May for the Irish Milers Meet a World Athletics Bronze Tour event.

Congratulations and well done Katie.
