Carrick-on-Suir Leaving Cert student Aoibhe Twomey has won her second World Irish Dancing title in a row.

The Scoil Mhuire Secondary School student from Castle Court, Carrick-on-Suir won her World title in the age 17 to 18 category at the World Irish Dancing Championships in Glasgow that took place between March 24 and 31.

Aoibhe, who is daughter of Barry and Marie Twomey, began Irish dancing at the age of five with the Michelle Higgins Academy in Carrick-on-Suir.

She now dances with the Flynn O’Kane Dance Academy in Nenagh run by Bernadette Flynn and Damien O’Kane of Lord of the Dance fame.

Aoibhe was one of three dancers from the Academy that won world titles in the recent World Championships that attracted 2,500 competitors. She won her first World Championships title in Montreal in Canada last year.

She travels to Nenagh three to four times a week for dance classes that last about two hours and also practices at home on days she has no classes.

Scoil Mhuire Secondary School congratulated Aoibhe on her success at the World Irish Dancing Championships. “We were so thrilled to hear this news and are incredibly proud of you Aoibhe,” said the school in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
