Pierce Purcell victory for Slievenamon over Clonmel
Despite the erratic weather, our Pierce Purcell team spent the past week getting in as much practice as they could, in between rain showers, for their first round match against Clonmel Golf Club - postponed from 5th April due to the weather.
The team received a great boost on Friday with the arrival of their new team jerseys - kindly sponsored by Unitec IT Solutions in Clonmel. Miguel Marques of Unitec arrived out to the Club with his wife Lorna and daughter Erika to make the official presentation, and the team lost no time in modelling the new kit!
The jerseys certainly saw plenty of action on Sunday 14th as Slievenamon and Clonmel went head to head in an epic battle. Resplendent in their new uniforms and spurred on by Slievenamon GC supporters (who apparently outnumbered the local supporters 4-1), the Slievenamon team played out of their skins. The results were texted back periodically to home base for those unable to attend: Slievenamon 2 up after 2, Clonmel 3 up after 6, Clonmel 2 up after 7, Slievenamon 3 up after 8, Slievenamon 4 up after 9 (we had Anthony Powell doing all the hard sums) … until inevitably we ended level with all to play for in the play-off hole.
And then finally - victory dances all round as Slievenamon, with one final effort, took the day’s honours.
It was one of those games where no-one deserved to lose, but we will take our win and move on to face Carrick in the next round (where extra medical attention will be laid on for those of a more sensitive disposition).
Local competitions resume
Local competitions are now at last resuming in Slievenamon so I will have lots of results for you next week (fingers crossed!). In the meantime, we are also putting the finishing touches to our planned Slievenamon Jubilee Open Competition, which we plan to run over the next few months to celebrate the Club’s 25th anniversary, so more news on that to follow.
