Council called on to intervene after ‘near miss involving a child’ in Tipperary village

Other coucillors said speed is one of the top concerns they hear on doorsteps

Councillor Michael Smith has raised concerns about speed in Knock Village following a “near miss involving a child.”

The councillor did not give any specific details but said: “That could have been very serious, and it involved a young child.”

He asked the council to meet with a local community group working on the issue and to put a plan in place for the village.

He said he acknowledges the council installed speed signage five or six years ago but that drivers do not pay it much heed.

“I would ask the council, as a matter of urgency to meet with that committee,” said Cllr Smith.

Cllr Sean Ryan supported his district colleague, saying speed is something people are very concerned about on the doorsteps.

He asked that the council do the same in Gortnahoe village.

District Engineer Thomas Duffy said his department would meet with the committee in Knock and carry out a speed survey.

However, he was sceptical that it would slow drivers down.

“It is the mindset that has to change. At the end of the day, we can put up as many signs as we want, but if drivers are not in compliance then we have a much bigger issue,” said Mr Duffy.
