Senator Garret Ahearn has extended best wishes to his party colleague Michael Murphy, who defeated him by 246 votes to 210 at Fine Gael's selection convention on Monday night to choose the candidate for the next General Election.
"Congratulations to my colleague Cllr Michael Murphy on a fantastic achievement last night on being selected to run for Fine Gael at the next General Election here in South Tipperary.
"I wish Micheal, Jess, Alex and all his friends and supporters my very warmest congratulations.
"While I am obviously disappointed, I know the party have selected an incredibly hard worker locally in Clonmel.
"We still have up to 11 months until the General Election and I will continue my work as a Senator with the same optimism and commitment for the people of Tipperary.
"I look forward to getting out on the doors with our Local Election councillors and candidates over the coming weeks and I know if we as a party remain united, we can have a really positive result on June 7, which puts Fine Gael in a strong position to regain our Dáil seat".
"I will, as I have always done, play my part in achieving the best result possible for our party in both elections".
