BoyleSports has made last year’s champion two-year-old City Of Troy the 4/6 favourite for Saturday’s 2000 Guineas after declarations were unveiled on Thursday.
The unbeaten Justify colt will begin his season tackling the undulations of the Rowley Mile, a test he passed in last year’s Dewhurst Stakes. He came home three-and-a-half lengths clear of the Owen Burrows-trained Alyanaabi, who will reoppose on Saturday as a 16/1 shot.
Richard Hannon’s Rosallion (9/2) is rated the biggest threat to blot City Of Troy’s copybook and he finished his two-year-old season off in style when winning the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere, beating subsequent Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner, Unquestionable.
Notable Speech (9/1) is the only other horse at a single figure price in the field, and he has carried the blue of Godolphin to a hattrick of all-weather victories this year. The stars, however, are aligning for City Of Troy to claim the first Classic of the season, with an attempt at the Triple Crown high on the wish lists of the Coolmore partners.
Aidan O’Brien has already hailed City Of Troy as the best two-year-old he has ever trained and with a weight of expectation on his shoulders, the master of Ballydoyle remains convinced a tilt at the Triple Crown could be within his stable-star’s remit.
City Of Troy is 2/1 to do the Guineas-Derby double and a 5/1 shot to add the St Leger and become the first horse since Nijinsky in 1970 to win the Triple Crown.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Excitement is building ahead of the 2000 Guineas on Saturday as the flat season really starts to hit top gear and punters remain confident that City Of Troy is racing’s newest superstar.”
