Albatross lands at Slievenamon, Tipperary - A very rare event indeed!

Peter Kelleher, who, while putting in some practice for the next round of the Pierce Purcell competition, managed to score a hole in one on the 8th at Slievenamon Golf Club (which is a par 4).

Another week of frenetic activity in Slievenamon Golf Club, where we have determined that the Summer beckons - all evidence to the contrary.

Fresh from his heroics in the Pierce Purcell Competition, Peter Kelleher rounded off last weekend by winning the Men’s Weekend Singles Competition (kindly sponsored by Alan Maher of Maher’s Londis in Clonmel).

Peter took the top spot on 42 points, beating John Doheny into 2nd spot on 41. Kevin Corry took 3rd on 40, John O’Sullivant 4th on 39 points, while Joe Hawkins had Best Gross on 30 pts.

Sunday saw our Ladies compete in the McGarry Cup Competition in blazing sunshine. After a fantastic day of golf, Lady Captain Paula Spillane took top prize, and the Cup, with a stunning round of 69. Catherine Cooney was 3nd on 77, 3rd was Breda Foley on 78 while Marian Power, fresh from her travels, won Best Gross.

The weekend also saw our Juniors play in the Junior Singles (U18) Competition, which was won by a very deserving Kaylum Cairns. Our Vice Captain Brian Moore popped into the Patrician Presentation Secondary School in Fethard to present Kaylum with his prize.

Monday was the turn of our Mixed Scramble - when golf and banter go hand in hand and nobody is safe from teasing.
Our winners on the day were Billy Phelan, Gerry Tracey and Christine Morries with a nett score of 35.7. 2nd were Adrian Furlong, Anthony Powell and Paddy Bambrick on 36.3 while 3rd were John J Doyle, Tom Galvin and Margaret Comerford on 37.9.

Tuesday our Ladies competed in a 12 Hole Stableford which was won by Marie Walsh on 22, with Marie Holohon on 2nd with 21 and Marian Power 3rd on 21.

Wednesday our Seniors participated in a Rumble with the distant rumblings of thunder threatening to appear.
Fortunately the worst of the weather stayed away and the Competition was finished without too much discomfort (although Paula’s special toasted sandwiches were a welcome treat afterwards in the Clubhouse.

Winners with 87 points were Michael W O’Meara, Eddie Daly and Matty Tyne. 2nd on 83 points were Jim O’Brien, Don O’Connell and Dan Hayes, while 3rd on 82 points were Eamon Power and Sean O’Dea with Pat McGarry.

Our Ladies have now launched their first Open Day of the Seaso, which will take place on Tuesday 11 June. The Competition will be played as a 3 person scramble with a twist - 2 to count on par 4s and 5s, 3 to count on par 3s and everyone to have at least 4 drives. The entry fee is €5 for Members and €15 for visitors.

We are also putting the finishing touches to our Silver Jubilee Open Competition which we hope to launch at the beginning of June.

We round off the week with the redoubtable Peter Kelleher, who, while putting in some practice for the next round of the Pierce Purcell competition, managed to score a hole in one on the 8th (which is a par 4). That man has some drive - in every sense of the word!
