Athletics: Tipperary duo keep the flag flying high with brilliant performances!

Alana Spillane and Lorna Ryan Ursuline Thurles, who competed in the National Post Primary Schools T&F Championships last weekend.

On Saturday morning Alana Spillane made the trip to the Tullamore Harriers stadium to take part in the 123.ie Irish Schools T&F Championship.

Alana qualified for this completion through claiming a bronze medal in the intermediate girls 3k at the Munster Championships in Templemore two weeks ago. Alana was in the blue of the Ursuline Secondary School Thurles.

The intermediate girls 3k race was first up on an ideal morning for running. The gun went and the 9 athletes began their 7 and a half laps.

The pack were tightly bunched through the opening number of laps, throughout these laps Alana ran a smart and controlled race and stayed with the pack.

As the race began to unfold a noticeable change of pace was inserted by the leaders. Once again Alana used her strength and endurance to dig deep and stay with the pace.

With 600m to go Emily Bolton of Mount Sackville secondary school in Dublin made a decisive burst. Alana dig deep and gave it everything over the last 600m to cross the line in an excellent 6th place with a time of 10.37.13.

It was a fantastic performance at her first Irish Schools T&F Championships to cap off an excellent schools T&F season.

Lorna Ryan Ursuline Thurles, who competed in the National Post Primary Schools T&F Championships last weekend also put in a fantastic performance in the Shot Putt.

Lorna took third (bronze) in the Shot Putt after a great performance. Congrats to both Lorna and Alana.
