Cashel call was close in the LEA as Declan Burgess and Liam Browne shine

Declan Burgess (above) was elected on the first count along last Saturday night as were Liam Browne and John O’Heney.

The run up to the Local Elections in Cashel presented voters with many locals to choose from. Local representatives Declan Burgess and Roger Kennedy were tipped to hold onto their seats however the duo of Brownes in the race meant that votes would be divided amongst four rather than two.

“It has been a brilliant result for me. I’m blown away by the response I received in this election.

“It was a tough campaign but I ran a campaign that was full of positivity and I worked hard the last five years and that came across on the doors so I’m really grateful to the electorate and they have given me a strong endorcement,” Declan Burgess said at the Count Centre.

The Cashel native had gone about his business over the previous months and voters re-elected him on the first count on Saturday night.

Rosegreen resident Liam Browne was also elected on the first count and he too had put in months of canvassing since he announced that he would run in the LEA.

His family background was in Sinn Féin, as many family members had represented the party in the past, but Liam opted to run as an Independent and was elected to much noise on Saturday night.

The two candidates, along with John O’Heney, polled well across the LEA. The other Cashel representatives or those nearby had to wait until Sunday to see how they fared.

Sinn Féin’s Molly Browne didn’t reach the quota and was eliminated as was Golden native Matthew Fogarty who ran for Fine Gael and was expected to attract some of the 2019 poll-topper, Fine Gael’s Michael Fitzgerald’s vote.

Roger Kennedy, who has strong connections to Cashel, was elected on Sunday evening for Fianna Fáil.
