The Big Bee Bop

As part of Tipperary County Council’s Creative Ireland Project, Burncourt Community Council will host the “Big Bee Bop” in late July and early August. This project is comprised of four strands of events – craft and making workshops, dance workshops, sound design and educational presentation centred on the world of bees.

The locale of Burncourt is a designated conservation area for the Native Irish Honey Bee and is a central tenet for its ongoing survival in a national context. The first strand is a series of Bee building workshops which will take place at Burncourt Community Hall to culminate in an arts installation of The Big Bee.

The Bee installation will be an artistic representation of a complex web of natural beauty, threats to it and our future focussed responsibilities to the natural world. The structure of the bee will be made using natural materials such as willow branches in addition to pre-loved clothing, recycled string and paper.

The second aspect is Behold the Bee Micheál Mac Giolla Coda & Aoife Nic Giolla Coda, Local beekeepers from Galtee Honey will lead a Behold the Bee educational presentation. Thirdly the Bee Bop where a local choreographer will host six Bee Bop workshops where the physical movement of the bees is explored through dance.

These workshops will culminate in a presentation of the dance learned (set to music) at the launch of The Big Bee installation. Fourtly Bee Bites focussed on the collection of audio clips (sound bites/popvox) from all participants. A daunting project which will hopefully be a wonderful production.

Dates of workshops next week.
