Local Tipperary village to host garden open day in aid of cancer research

Maire Wixted will host an open day at Garville Gardens in Upperchurch on Sunday, June 30, with visiting from 2pm to 5pm.

The Gardens are laid out over nearly two acres and consist of many established trees and shrubs planted by her late father-in-law.

There are many younger trees and shrubs planted in recent years also.

The vegetable garden is in full growth and the many herbaceous borders are ever changing as the season changes from Winter to Spring and now Summer.

All proceeds are in aid of blood cancer research in the Mercy Hospital in Cork through the MOSAICC project.

Cork is the only centre for this research in Ireland at present.

Voluntary donations will be gratefully received by visitors to the gardens who have been most generous on previous open days.

When Maire presented Dr. Clodagh Keohane with a cheque for this project in 2022, it enabled them to include another ten people on their research programme.

There are now thirty patients recruited in the Cork section of this international study.

Maire's late husband Seán Wixted died from myelofibrosis, which is the most serious form of blood cancer under research in this project.

Together they had great plans to develop the garden and it has been a privilege for her to fulfil their shared dream in his memory.

Maire is indebted to all who have helped make the previous Open Days as successful as they have been.
