Ireland is now just 6/5 (from 13/8) to score a record equalling three gold medals at this summer’s Paris Olympics with BoyleSports as the bookmaker reports a major gamble on Ireland to strike gold.
A sensational run at last month’s European Athletics Championships saw the 4x400m mixed relay team secure gold and Ciara Mageean emerge as the 1500m champion as Ireland look set to field their strongest ever track team at the Olympics.
Rhasidat Adeleke will lead the charge after being crowned the fastest Irish woman in history at Sunday’s National Track and Field Championships. The Tallaght native added the 100m national record to her tally of 200m and 400m records and now turns her attention to the Olympics later this month.
With a trio of gold medals in Atlanta in 1996 holding the Irish record, a customary strong showing in rowing, boxing, eventing and showjumping could see that record put under pressure.
Kelly Harrington will bid to win back-to-back boxing golds after scoring in Tokyo in 2021, while rowing duo Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy will also seek to double their gold tallies after success in Japan.
Daniel Wiffen, who became Ireland’s first ever world champion swimmer this year is well fancied to enhance Ireland’s medal haul as is pommel-horse world champion Rhys McClenaghan, who could secure Ireland’s first ever gymnastics gold.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Ireland is set to field what is likely its strongest ever team for an Olympics and confidence is really starting to grow that they’ll strike gold in Paris and smash their record gold medal haul of three.”
