A Clonmel man has succeeded in breaking a 58-year old Croke Park record for the fastest mile race.

Clonmel AC runner, Sean Tobin, participated in the historic mile record attempt to commemorate the Tailteann Games Centenary this week (July 7).

Although Tobin finished in third place, he and the first and second place winners all smashed the former record from 1966.

The race took place at half time of the GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Final between Limerick and Cork, with Luke Houser of University of Washington winning with a time of 4:10:39.

Tobin came in third position with a time of 4:11.79, directly behind Shane Bracken of Swinford AC (4:10.88) and ahead of John Travers of Donore Harriers AC (4:13.35).

According to the GAA, all top three runners were inside the previous record when the late Kerry Olympian, Tom O'Riordan, ran a mile at Croke Park in 4:12.06 as part of the Tailteann Games athletics championships.

Over 80,000 people watched as Houser won the first one mile race held in Croke Park in 58 years.
