On Tuesday the people of Clonmel came out in force to support our boy in the boat, Daire Lynch.
Rowing with Philip Doyle in the Men's Heavyweight 2x Double Sculls at the Olympic Games, the two oarsmen were ready to row the race of their lives.
Bathed in glorious sunshine, the Kickham Barracks Plaza was a magnificent venue to show the race on the big screen. Young and old mingled as they waited in eager anticipation of the semi-final, where the first three crews went forward to the final on Thursday.
From the start, the German crew led out, with the Irish boat staying in touch with New Zealand, USA, Serbia and Norway.
Following their explosive start, it was expected that Germany would be reeled in by the chasing pack. However, at the halfway stage Germany were still out in front and we were starting to wonder if they could maintain that blistering pace, leading to a messy scrap for the other two qualifying spots.
We needn't have worried. Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle are very mature racers and at this stage they made a push, which brought the Irish boat into the lead, much to the delight of the assembled crowd in Clonmel. They maintained this lead all the way to the line without ever having to hit the afterburners. The German crew paid the price for their explosive start and USA and New Zealand came through for the other qualification spots.
The Netherlands won the other semi-final, with Spain and Romania second and third respectively.
With just 2.5 seconds separating all six crews, it promises to be a cracking final.
The people of Clonmel and Tipperary have been a long time waiting for an Olympic medal but I think that is about to change on Thursday.
Show your support for our boy in the boat. Come down to the Kickham Barracks Plaza to watch the race at 10.30 on Thursday morning with your family and friends and cheer on Daire Lynch.
