Two men from Tipperary were prominent players for Ireland in the Touch Rugby World Cup held in Nottingham, England recently.

Kevin Foley from Ardfinnan and Paddy O’Sullivan from Fethard were part of the Ireland Men’s over 45s team that claimed ninth place in the competition with wins over Portugal and Spain.

Paddy is based in Galway and plays with the Racoon West Touch club there.

He has been playing Touch Rugby for Ireland in the over age categories since 2013.

In this tournament, he was Ireland’s top scorer with four tries.

Kevin, meanwhile, has been living in the UK for many years and works as a police officer with the London Metropolitan Police.
He plays his club touch rugby with Bedford Eagles and has also represented the regional Midlands Tigers side in the English national championship.

Kevin was making his debut for Ireland in this competition and he certainly impressed, as he was named player of the tournament by his teammates. Well done to both players.

As well as Paddy and Kevin, Nathan Morehu, a New Zealander based in Thurles, was a key player on the Ireland Men’s 30s squad that reached the quarter-finals of their competition.

Several of the games involving both the Men’s 45s and Men’s 30s are available to watch on the Federation of International Touch YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@internationaltouch.

Touch Rugby is six-a-side, non-contact version of rugby, which is very popular in Australia and New Zealand where it is the number one participation sport.

Here in Ireland it is growing in popularity, with nearly 500 players.

Locally, there is a Touch Rugby club based in Limerick/Clare called Munster Touch, who have been in existence since 2017.

See the IRFU Munster Touch Rugby club on Facebook for more information if you are interested in getting involved.
