Council approves 5% hike in Tipperary's Local Property Tax levy for next three years

Tipperary County Council's elected members have approved a 5% rise in the Local Property Tax to be levied on more than 64,000 homeowners in the county over the next three years.

The 5% hike in the LPT for the years 2025, 2026 and 2027 was approved by a vote of councillors taken at this morning's September Council meeting in Clonmel.

Tipperary County Council management had proposed a 5% increase in the LPT for the full five-year term of the Council in order to increase the Council's funding to invest in council owned and supported leisure and art centres, climate action projects and to boost its General Municipal Allocation fund that is distributed to community and cultural groups, projects and festivals in each municipal district.

Following a presentation by the Council's Head of Finance Mark Connolly and debate by councillors, an alternative proposal tabled by Fianna Fáil Cllr Michael Smith and seconded by Fine Gael Cllr Phyl Bugler to sanction a 5% increase on the 2024 LPT rate for the next three years was voted on and approved by 30 votes to eight with one abstention and one councillor absent.

The Council's Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Labour councillors and some independents voted in favour of the increase, which will bring Tipperary's Local Property Tax levy to 15% above the basic LPT rate in 2025.  It's currently fixed at 10% above the basic LPT rate.

The Fianna Fáil/Fine Gael proposal was opposed by Sinn Féin councillors David Dunne and Annemarie Ryan, Workers & Unemployment Action Group Cllr Pat English and Independent Cllrs Niall Dennehy, Máirín McGrath, Richie Molloy, Andy Moloney and Seamus Morris.  Independent Cllr Liam Browne abstained.

Mr Connolly said the 5% increase will amount to less than €10 per year, less than €1 per month and 19c per week for 95% of home owners in the county. And he pointed out that the council's resolution to increase the LPT by 5% or 15% above the base rate can be revoked by councillors this time next year.
