Award-winning film from Tipperary director to be screened on TV ahead of Oscar shortlist

Following its pre-Oscar nomination and success on the international film festival circuit, the Tipperary-written and directed short film CALF will air on Irish television screens later this month.

Virgin Media Three & Virgin Media Play will air the short film on 24th October at 10.45pm and on Halloween night at 11pm on Virgin Media Two.

CALF was a winning short in Virgin Media Discovers and also won an IFTA this year for Live Action Short.

Written and directed by Tipperary filmmaker Jamie O’Rourke, this gut-wrenching and thought -provoking film looks at domestic violence.

Set on a rural farm in Ireland, with the looming arrival of the birth of a calf, a sinister accident leave Cáit with a terrible decision to make. This poignant short explores shock, grief and trauma and poses tough questions for the audience. But there are never easy answers when a family is in the grip of abuse.

Jamie's first film, SCRAP, was nominated for an IFTA in 2022 and screened in competition at the 2023 Clermont-Ferrand International Film Festival. He is currently in development on his first feature.

Along with Huesca International Film Festival CALF has been selected at Oscar-qualifying festivals around the world including Palm Springs, Melbourne, Busan, Brussels and many more.

This gripping film has also qualified to be considered for the 2025 Oscars.

CALF was produced for Virgin Media Discovers in association with Screen Ireland by Carbonated Comet in association with Sugarloaf Films. The IFTA-winning and two-time Oscar-longlisted company based in the Midwest of Ireland, and their work has screened at festivals around the world and they are currently developing a number of feature films.

The film is brought to life by stirring performances from rising star Isabelle Connolly (God's Creatures) and Kate Nic Chonaonaigh (An Cailín Ciúin/The Quiet Girl).
